Music and Lyrics by Donna Klein

Hear it! mp3

Got up in the morning, the sun was shining bright.
The city sparkled like diamonds; Almost blinded me by the light!

Hopped onto the 8:15, went looking for a seat.
In the last car they were nice enough To make a place for me!

But it left a question on my mind. Why were these people being kind?
It's a pity but people just aren't that nice you know,

In New York City; the steel rod that never bends.
New York City; the last place you'd expect to find a friend!

Climbed out of the cavern. Made my way up to the street.
I wasn't prepared for all of the smiling faces I would meet.

Got lost on my way to Dave's house. So I stopped and asked a cop.
He just grinned and pointed and said, "Don't worry, it's only up the block."

Better check me for a fever, 'cause no one is gonna believe it!
It's a pity but people just aren't that nice you know,

In New York City; where fame can go right to your head.
New York City, where fear and frustration can find you instead!

Uptown, downtown, west side or east. Wherever I go I know that I can find a feast!
Brooklyn, The Bronx, Manhattan and Queens, Staten Island, too. All I have to do is choose!

Took a cab down to the village. Had to feed my soul.
Snacked on a little bit of Rock and a little bit of Roll.

Picked out my souvenir. What happened next was strange.
From the distance came a voice saying, "Hey, lady you dropped your change!"

Please check me for a fever, 'cause no one is gonna believe it!
It's a pity but people just aren't that nice you know,

In New York City; the town that is so corrupt.
New York City; where everyone is out just to make a buck.

New York City; now everyone thinks I'm insane.
New York City; they'll never let me out on my own again!
