Music and Lyrics by Donna Klein
By the morning's early light I walk down to the water's edge.
Thinking about what's to come in the day ahead.
Sometimes it seems I'm staring out onto mirrored glass.
Suddenly from out of nowhere, I'm staring at someone's trash.
Then I see...
Plastic bags and old dirty rags and styrofoam cups.
Bottles and cans and old rusty fans and cigarette butts.
When will we Take Responsibility?
Used to be that life was teeming from this very shore.
Dolphins and pelicans don't come around so much anymore.
Herons and egrets too, fishing in the mire.
Wonder how long it will be before they get too tired
Of seeing...
Plastic bags and old dirty rags and styrofoam cups.
Bottles and cans and old rusty fans and cigarette butts.
When will we Take Responsibility?
When will we get some pride?
Time is not on our side anymore.
It is one luxury we cannot afford.
We may try to save the panther and the manatee.
But what of the creatures we don't hear and we don't see.
One day we may wake up and wonder what went wrong,
But it may be too late; what was bountiful might be all gone.
But we'll have...
Plastic bags and old dirty rags and styrofoam cups.
Bottles and cans and old rusty fans and cigarette butts.
When will we Take Responsibility?
When will we get some pride?
When will we Take Responsibility?
When will we get some pride?
