Wellness Advocacy

Is being well and staying well important to you? It's important to me, now more than ever. Who wants to lose the health and vitality of youth? Life doesn't give us any guarantees, but there are things we can do to maintain and improve our overall wellness. This is my wellness story.

I was a young, single mom who needed to keep up with my child when chronic pain from scoliosis and almost breaking my neck in high school started taking its toll. Two painful falls on the ice within a few weeks didn't help, either. A coworker suggest I see her chiropractor and for me, the rest is history. Where once chronic pain management (over the counter meds) ruled my days and nights, chiropractic care greatly reduced my pain and allowed me to live a more normal life.

Chiropractic isn't a magic bullet. I still get headaches. I still take naproxen on occasion. I can tell without looking at a calendar when it is time for my next maintenance adjustment. But, my medicine cabinet is not filled with pain meds, and I'm happy about that!

What I wasn't happy about was the return of chronic pain a few years ago that was not necessarily related to the scoliosis or injury. I wasn't sleeping well because pain woke me up several times a night on many nights. I knew the body changed as we age, but this was ridiculous! Then, there were the nights that I just couldn't sleep. I started taking melatonin to help with the general sleeplessness. Naproxen became my friend too, but knew that was a double edged sword. I was looking for another way to deal with the pain.

A couple of years ago I was getting ready to teach a music lesson when the grandmother of a student noticed I wasn't my usual bubbly self. I told her I had a headache and she gave me an essential oil blend to rub on my forhead and neck. It felt good, smelled good, and I found I felt a lot better by the end of the lesson. This began my journey into the use of essential oils and aromatherapy. About a year later, I met the woman who would help me explore and learn.

I researched how inflammation works and affects the body and the brain. I needed to make some changes. I started with tri-pack of supplements containing essential oils; a multi-vitamin and mineral supplement, a complex that supports healthy cell function, and an omega complex that supports healthy joint function. Antioxidants are plentiful in these supplements.

One month later, I stopped taking naproxen at night to see if pain would wake me up. No pain on the first night. No pain on the second or third, etc. OK. This was good. I also felt like I had more energy.

A semester break came up a few weeks later. I stopped taking melatonin to see if I could sleep without the help. I slept very well that night. I've slept very well many nights since. I no longer need to take naproxen on a regular basis and I don't take melatonin at all.

Recently, my schedule had me going crazy and I forgot to take my supplements for a couple of days. I woke up with some aches. I thought about it and the only thing that changed was that I forgot to take them. It hit home with me that I seem to be keeping inflammation at bay with these supplements.

I've changed my diet and am trying to stay ahead of stress. I've lost weight and want to keep this momentum going. My doctor recommends I take up tai chi, yoga, and pilates. I'm looking forward to tap dancing lessons! I also use other essential oils for a variety of reasons. I love lemon in my water (don't need the sugar in lemonade!), white fir works nicely on the random ache from arthritis. I diffuse them to change my mood or to help me concentrate.
